Join us for an in-depth reasoning on the styles and fashions that have made Jamaican dancehall music one of Jamaica's many iconic cultural exports around the globe. Professor Patricia Saunders, of University of Miami, and Professor Donna Hope, of University of the West Indies, Jamaica, will discuss the reasoning about the wisdom and dangers inherent in the con/fusion of the Jamaican colloquialisms "Fashion Ova Style" and "Sell Off," in contemporary global markets.
Leaning into Professor Saunders' book, "Buyers Beware: Insurgency and Consumption in Caribbean Popular Culture," the conversation will challenge stereotypes around the aesthetic practices of working poor and working-class diaspora subjects, explore the significance of stylizing the Black body, and question the lack of attention to these practices. The discussion also examines how contemporary artists intervene in global commodification dynamics, offering a fresh perspective on agency, performance, and freedom within consumer culture.
This program is presented by PAMM's Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI) in partnership with University of Miami Center for the Humanities, Center for Global Black Studies, and the Department of English. Simultaneous interpretation into American Sign Language (ASL), Haitian Creole, and Spanish will be available. This program will also be live streamed via YouTube Live.
